WELCOME TO THE GUIDANCE WEB SITE!

FAREWELL to the MIGHTY FINE CLASS OF 2010! Vaya con Dios!
The students, and the colleges they plan to attend are listed under the heading "Recent Graduates"

When the new year begins, please remember:

If you need to change a class, please understand that these are my priorites, IN THIS ORDER

1. CLASSES NEEDED FOR HS GRADUATION (Bible, English, Govt, Hisitory, Science, etc.)
2. OTHER CORE CLASSES NEEDED FOR FUTURE PLANS (Foreign language, advanced math and science, in some cases, art and music for those pursuing it as a career)
3. ELECTIVE CLASSES students wish to take.

To be honest, when your study hall occurs, when your "easy" classes are scheduled, which teacher you have, are very far down on the list: getting classes NEEDED and REQUIRED ARE FIRST PRIORITY.

***************
Please peruse the headers above so that you may go directly to topics of interest to YOU.

If you have suggestions for other topics -- please let me know!! I am here to answer the questions you DO have, not the questions I think you SHOULD have!

My eventual goal is to get more hits than the Athletics site. A girl can dream, right?
******************

As an added benefit to the PSAT, and as an aid to college planning and selection, all juniors and seniors have received access to My College Quickstart, a college and career exploration tool. This program includes information on colleges, careers, and includes a peronality inventory. It is available, free of charge, to your students solely because they took the PSAT. Deatils concerning the above are addressed on the PSAT score sheet!

PACKETS CONCERNING COLLEGE SELECTION AND APPLICATION should be deliverd to you senior shortly after Labor Day. I also plan to see each senior at leat once for a 50 minute appointment to discuss post-high school options.

REPORT CARDS

The entry below is left over from last year -- you may find it of interest, because our teachers will be commenting on aspects other than the grade a student makes in interim and quarterly reports. Many of these factors affect that numeric grade, so please pay attention to them when report cards do come out. The letter often making the most appearances is that lovely "M" -- Missing work/homework. Please verify that your student is completing his/her assignments, and is submitting them on time! Missing assignments is the most common method I've seen of tanking a grade.

CONDUCT CODES
E = Excellent
G = Good
S = Satisfactory
N = Needs Improvement
U = Unsatisfactory

COMMENT CODES
A = Absences/tardies affecting grade
B = Better attitude is needed
C = Conference is requested
D = Disruptive
E = Effort is inconsistent
F = Focus on task is needed
L = Low test/quiz grades
M = Missing/incomplete work/homework
N = Notes need to be taken
P = Participation in class is needed
S = Signed materials are not returned promptly
T = Talks excessively
U = Unprepared for class
W = Works hard, consistently
X = eXcellent work
Y = Your student is a pleasure to teach
Z = Zounds! Improvement has been made!

This is the not so happy part of the page. If your student fails certain course required for graduation from DBCS, he/she will see them again! Courses are passed or failed by semester in the high school.

SENIORS! KEEP THOSE APPLICATIONS COMING!!

Don't wait for standardized test scores to come in to apply. If you've put the colleges to which you're applying on the standardized test application, the colleges will get your scores soon enough.

IF YOU DON'T LIKE YOUR SAT SCORE, GIVE THE ACT A SHOT!!
The design philosophy behind these tests is totally different. The SAT is essentially a REASONING test, the ACT an ACHIEVEMENT test.

I have flyers outside my office with the above information, as well as the website addresses. Please pick one up!

Check to see which SAT II Tests,(Subject Tests) if any, are required by the colleges to which you are planning to apply, and do work them into your test-taking schedule. Some colleges will take the ACT in lieu of any SAT II tests.

I WILL BE SCHEDULING APPOINTMENTS WITH ALL SENIORS. THEY WILL BE ON CALENDARS THAT THE SENIORS RECEIVE IN A PACKET TO BE GIVEN TO THEM AT THE BEGINNING OF SCHOOL! I am more than willing to have parents present at these appointments! Please be aware, however, that I schedule these appointments to avoid the STUDENT's having to miss a core class.

ATHLETES!!
If you are planning to play an NCAA Division I, or II sport in college, you need to be registered with the NCAA Clearinghouse BEFORE YOU MAKE AN OFFICIAL VISIT TO A PROSPECTIVE COLLEGE. This is a new rule instituted by the NCAA as of August 1, 2007. Registration involves my forwarding a transcript as well as your registering online and paying the Clearinghouse's fee. Please come see me if you are looking at collegiate athletics, or are being looked at by college coaches!!

SCHEDULES
We do a type of DROP-ADD when students need to change courses for good reason. Bad reasons: I want to be with my friend, I want a seventh period study hall, I play sports. (Two thirds of the student body plays sports!) Most of the time (remember, this world is fallen..) problems can be worked out, and I'm here to work with you. That's my job, and I'm happy to do it. I am checking my e-mail, and I'm happy to answer your questions through that medium.

AFTER THE DROP-ADD PERIOD you must have a COMPELLING reason to drop a class -- not "I'm tired of this and I don't want to do it anymore". You may NOT drop classes required for HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION, period. In order to drop a class, a student must complete a Drop/Add form, and have it signed by the teacher, the parent, me, and, after the Drop-Add period, Mr. Law.

E-MAIL
E Mail Me with your questions and concerns. My address at school is kridenour@denbighbaptist.org I'm happy to talk to you on the phone as well, but I do end up playing lots of phone tag, which frustrates everyone!
